After a hard, busy day it feels really good just to sit down and rest. Or, maybe you’ve just finished a difficult project, and now you get to rest, if only for a little while. There’s nothing quite like knowing that the work is done, and you are free to rest. I can already sense some of you snickering, “Yeah, like that’s ever going to happen!” Sometimes it seems like our bosses, families, and circumstances are in a conspiracy to keep us from being able to rest. One of the results of this is the abundance of stress-related medical problems in our society. Perhaps you are experiencing some of these problems.
I’m not a doctor, and I’m not giving a prescription here, but I do know that Jesus can help. In Matthew 11:28-29 the Lord Jesus invited, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” The Lord knows we need rest. Our bodies are not designed to go on and on without rest, so God gave us the rule of a Sabbath rest. Neither are our souls designed to go without rest. For this, God provided Jesus for us. The Lord knows that the labor of trying to work for our salvation and being so heavily laden with the burden of our guilt is simply more than we can bear. Our souls were not designed to handle that labor or that burden. Jesus was sent so that we would not have to labor for our salvation, and so that He could bear our burden of guilt for us. In Jesus we find rest for our souls, simply by putting our faith in Him. Does that mean that the boss, or family, or circumstances will ease up on us? Probably not, but when our souls are at rest in Jesus, He gives grace to help us bear our physical burdens also. Faith in Him will help us through anything.
