New International Version:
Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.
Jesus is talking to the people in or around Capernaum about Jesus being the Bread of Life (John 6:25).
What I’m going to talk about is the from John 6:47, reading from NIV –
“Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.”
First of all, this verse is just fantastic. Jesus is talking about salvation and having eternal life. Its a one line sentence that speaks to the masses. It might be pretty obvious what Jesus is saying but let’s break down each of the words and the meaning of what Jesus is saying.
“Very truly I tell you,” – When one writes at the end of the letter ‘Very truly . . .’ , their giving their sincerity, their passion, their utmost pouring of their soul, if you will, that they really mean what they are saying. Jesus has something sincerely to tell you, he’s very passionate about to say and you need to listen and listen carefully. “Very truly I tell you,” he starts.
The second part of his sentence – ‘ the one who believes has eternal life.’
By far, my favorite part. Why?
The one, that is you, who believes . . . notice, Jesus doesn’t say, the one who pays, the one who gets their life straighten out, the one who works hard, the one who . . . you fill in the blank with what’s going in your life. You get the picture.
He says, “the one who believes”
If you notice the word believes – its a verb, an action! With the letter “s” on the end of it, its a third person present meaning he’s talking to you, he’s talking me and anyone else who wants to listen.
What does it mean to believe? What does this word believe really mean?
According to Merriam-Webster dictionary the word believe means
:to accept or regard (something) as true
: to accept the truth of what is said by (someone)
Just as you believe that the grass is green and the sky is blue, Jesus, in a sense, and taking the definition from Webster, is saying this – The one who accepts, The one who accepts the truth of what is said by someone (in this case Jesus) has everlasting life.
Its not the one who come with money, its not the one who gives to the poor, the one who works really hard for good – no! He says very clearly, the one who believes, believes.
I just love this part! It’s so comforting to know that all you have to do is believe! How hard can that be? It ought not to be that hard for anyone to believe, really. It is well known through out World history that Jesus did live in the era of his time, that Jesus was a real person.
Let me ask you this – do you believe that Genghis Khan, Alexander III of Macedon, commonly known as Alexander the Great, and Napoleon Bonaparte who was a French military and political leader who rose to prominence during the latter stages of the French Revolution and its associated wars in Europe, were real people?
Why do you believe that these people ever lived? I’m going go out on a limb and say that you’ve never seen or met these people. That you you’ve never shook hands with them.
As history has told us, they breathed and walked on this very same planet that Jesus did in his time. And guess what – Jesus in the only one who said,
” Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life”.
All you have to do is believe in Jesus.
