The Lord Jesus is our High Priest. In the Old Testament the high priest was responsible for offering the sacrifices that were required to cover his own sins and the sins of the people.
These special sacrifices were offered each year on the Day of Atonement, and only the high priest appointed by God could do it. No one else could. Year after year, the high priest offered the same kind of sacrifices, doing the same things each year. The problem was that neither the high priest, nor the sacrifices, were perfect. The high priest was a man, and just like every other man, a sinful person. The sacrifices were animals, bulls or goats, whose death could not possibly pay for the sins of humanity. This tells us exactly why we need the Lord Jesus to be our High Priest.
We need someone who is a perfect man, who can offer a perfect sacrifice on our behalf. Hebrews 8:1 tells us that, “We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens.” We also have a perfect sacrifice in the Lord Jesus Christ. Hebrews 9:14 asks, “How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” As our High Priest, Jesus Christ sacrificed Himself to pay fully and completely the penalty for our sins. And, since it was the perfect sacrifice, offered by the perfect High Priest, He only had to do it once. That one sacrifice is good for all people, forever.
The Lord Jesus is our High Priest. He has done what He needed to do so that our sins could be forgiven. Have you done what you need to do to receive that forgiveness from Him? Admit that you are a sinner. Believe that Jesus died for your sins and rose from the dead on the third day. Confess Jesus as your Lord and Savior.
